Taranaki’s economy is diverse and our contribution to the nation’s GDP is the highest per capita.

Built on strong foundations of dairying, oil and gas, the region is also strong in engineering, business services, healthcare and social services, construction, agriculture and food technology disciplines. There is growing a hospitality and tourism sector, niche manufacturing and a developing creative/arts sector.

Taranaki has a lower unemployment rate and a higher participation rate than the national average. With the growing population currently at 110,000 and an annual increase in new arrivals to the region, more building consents, more visitors and more people employed in more businesses. Over time, our economy has shown that it is strong, resilient and has the impetus and determination to bounce back from any global or national fluctuations.
